Natural Features

NATURAL CHARACTERISTIC

CLIMATE
The geography and topography of the Municipality of Strumica are characterized by two zonal climates. Sub-Mediterranean, with an easterly continental crossing, which gives the region its distinctive long warm summers with high daily temperatures and annual rain accumulation, The lowest winter temperature and arrival of winds from all directions.

The average annual temperature of the air is 13,1 Celsius with the highest average monthly temperature in July with 23,9 C and the lowest average monthly temperature in January with 1,7 C. 
The Strumica region has a long period of sunny days of high intensity. The climate has around 230 sunny days annually. The sun shines, on average, 2377 hours a year. Foggy days usually occur in November, December, and January, with a maximum of 20 days annually. 
Because of the Sub-Mediterranean influence from the Aegean Sea and the influence of the continental climate, the climate conditions in the Strumica region are characterized by low annual accumulation of rain and fluctuating annual winter temperature. 
In Strumica, average annual rainfall is 604 mm. Most of the rain falls in Spring and Fall, while drought is rare. The monthly temperatures changes, as well as the quantity of rainfall in the Strumica region, are detailed in the tables:

SOIL
The entire surface of the Strumica field has been inspected. Of this surface area, 26165 ha are irrigated. In the lower and central parts of the valley, most have алувијалните soil. Their territories are around 11520 ha and its high level of fertility is one of the important factors in development of agricultural production. 
Parts of intensive garden production lie within the borders of Municipality of Strumica, in: Dabile, Dobrejci, Procenikovo, Murtino, Kuklish, Gradsko Baldovi. They have good air circulation and high capacity for absorbance. Most have soil from Class II and III with total sum of 24400 ha or above 93%, while less than 7% belong to Classes IV and VI. 

MOUNTAINS
The Strumica region is surrounded by the mountains Belacica, Ograzden and Elenica. The configuration of these mountains gives Strumica the form of a large triangle. Belasica is on the Southeast side of Strumica, measuring 2031 m at its highest point. The base of the mountain measures more than 70 km 2. Belasica is one of the oldest mountains in the Balkans and is found in the cross-border area between Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece. 

Ograzden is Northeast of Strumica and has a maximum height of 1746 m.
Elenica is West of Strumica with a maximum height of 970 m. 
The mountains are dominated by seasonal trees. Evergreen trees are less common, and can be found in the highest parts of the mountains. 

RIVERS
Hydrographic system in the Strumica Region is rich with rivers, river sources and tributaries.
The main recipient is the River Strumica, with a regular riverbed which measures 31 km long. The left tributary is the River Turija with a length of 22 km. –From Turija to its outlet with the River Strumica, the riverbed measures 8 km.

The right tributary of the River Strumica is Monospitovo Canal with a14,1 km-long riverbed.
