Zoran Zaev (biography)

Zoran Zaev was born on the 8th of October 1974 in Strumica. He is married to Zorica Zaeva and he is the father of two children (a daughter and a son).

He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown, and he graduated at the Faculty of Economy, Sts. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, in 1997. At the moment he is a post graduate at the above stated faculty, his area of specialty being monetary economy and finance.

He speaks two foreign languages: English and Serbian.

He started his professional career in the enterprise “Trgoproduct” in Strumica. He was an employee there from 1997 to 2003, and in 2001 he was the general manager of the company. He was a member of the administrative boards of the Savings Bank “Peon” (1998-2003) and the Industry of construction materials “Elenica” (2001-2003). He was also the President of the administrative board of the Public Utilities Enterprise “Komunalec” (2000-2003).

Zaev has been a member of SDSM since 1996. In 2003, he was elected member of the Parliament of Republic of Macedonia. In 2006, he became the vice-president of SDSM. In 2008 he was appointed a temporary president of this political party. From June 2013 until now, he has been the President of SDSM.

In 2005, he was elected the Mayor of Strumica Municipality, which made him the youngest mayor in Republic of Macedonia. He was reelected for this position twice, gaining the trust of the Strumica citizens again in 2009 and 2013. That made him the only mayor in the history of Strumica Municipality that gained three consecutive mandates to run the municipality.

He has been awarded for his work several times. He is the winner of several golden plates and other national and international awards and certificates, such as the Award for best practices from the Council of Europe, for the first public-private partnership in the project “Global”, Gold Medal from the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC), the highest national award for ecology, Golden plate for the most humane mayor in Republic of Macedonia investing in sport, and many others.
